Five things to look forward to this fall.

1) Everett Golson.  Not only can he be the Golson from 2012 but can he be anywhere where he should be after coming to South Bend over three years ago.

2) Running Backs.  Will Cam McDaniel continue his gritty rise to being a leader of this football team?  Will Greg Bryant break out and be as great as many think he can be?  And can Tarean Folston top last season?

3) Corey Robinson.  How good can this kid be?

4) New Coordinators.  With new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators in place things will look different on both sides of the ball.

5) Turf.  Florida State probably wished we had done this a long time ago.

Irish Draft Review

Notre Dame has turned another page in its history as the 2014 NFL Draft is finished.  With the University of Texas failing to have a player drafted Notre Dame now has the longest streak of consecutive of have at least one player drafted each year going back to 1938.  That is a nice statistic to share when Irish coaches sit in a recruit's living room.  After celebrating its history we should also take a moment to recognize this year's success.  Notre Dame had eight players drafted (the most since 1994) and four players signing as free agents.  To put the draft into perspective here is a look at how many some of the other national programs had drafted; Michigan 3, USC 3, Florida State 7, Auburn 4, Ohio State 6, Michigan State 1 and Stanford 6.

Last week talking Irish previewed Notre Dame's draft prospects, this week we will review how they did, how we did on the predictions and say goodbye to these former players as they move one to the next step in their lives.

Zack Martin lead the way by being Notre Dames first player picked going in the first round and number 16 overall to the Dallas Cowboys.  Talking Irish preview: "Zack Martin should not only go in the first round but he may also be the first Notre Dame player taken in this year's draft."

Stephon Tuitt was taken in the sixth round by the Pittsburg Steelers with the 46th overall pick.  Talking Irish preview: "Even though he has first round potential depending on team needs he might slide to the second round..."

Troy Niklas may have been the surprise of the draft for the Irish being selected 52nd overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round.  Talking Irish preview: "Niklas could have used another season to develop his skills at the tight end position but because of his potential expect an NFL team to take him late in the draft."

Louis Nix may have been expected to go sooner than 83rd in the third round by the Houston Texans.  Talking Irish preview: " Although most pick Nix to go in the first round and he should, depending on what teams need he might end up going early in the second round."

Chris Watt also went in the third round to the San Diego Chargers with the 89th overall pick impressing us.  Talking Irish preview: "Watt has NFL potential and most likely have to take the free agent route however I would not be overly surprised if he was taken late in the draft by a team looking for a solid lineman."

Prince Shembo was the only Notre Dame player taken in the sixth round.  He went 139th overall to the Atlanta Falcons.  Talking Irish preview: " He most likely will not be drafted but he should defiantly be signed as a free agent and will work his way onto a team."

Bennett Jackson was drafted by the NY Giants in the sixth round with the 187th overall pick.  Talking Irish preview: "His body of work at Notre Dame may however may result in him being drafted in a later round.  If not he will not only be signed as a free agent he will make a team for the fall."

TJ Jones was the last Irish player taken in the draft with the 189th overall pick in the sixth round by the Detroit Lions.  Talking Irish preview: "Jones very well could be drafted in the mid to late rounds to a team looking for a solid receiver who has good hands, is a solid route runner yet a bit undersized."

Notre Dame also had several players sign over the weekend as free agents.

Tommy Rees - Washington Redskins.  Talking Irish preview: "No way, no how is he drafted but I would bet he makes a practice squad somewhere."

Carlo Calabrese - Cleveland Browns.  Talking Irish preview: " Don't expect to hear Carlo's name called from the podium, however he could work his way onto a team's roster."

Dan Fox - New York Giants.  Talking Irish preview: "I think Fox has a chance to be drafted and if not I would expect him to be signed as a free agent very quickly."

George Atkinson III - Oakland Raiders.  Talking Irish preview: "I expect him to go undrafted and probably sign as a free agent."

NOTE:  Mike Golic Jr. signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent over the weekend.

Notre Dame NFL Draft Hopefuls

As former Notre Dame players are hoping to make the next step in their football careers this week during the NFL draft or perhaps with free agency Talking Irish will give its annual two-cents on how they may make out.

Just like last year we will use the list of players ESPN.com provides as NFL prospects.

George Atkinson III had a year of eligibility left after three years of not being able to step up to the number one running back position.  He had moments of greatness but could not put it all together on the field.  Atkinson has the tools to be a good player, especially the speed but he will need to improve his techniques out of the backfield (lowering his shoulders) to make it at the nest level.  I expect him to go undrafted and probably sign as a free agent.  His speed could make him valuable on special teams.

Joey Brooks came to South Bend to play basketball.  He was on the basketball team for several years before trying football.  Brooks played spring ball but never made the fall squad.  Why he is listed in unclear as he never even suited up for the Irish let alone played a down.

Carlo Calabrese looks and often played the role of a middle run stopping linebacker.  Calabrese was more than a solid linebacker for Notre Dame but I am not sure he has enough to contribute at the next level.  Don't expect to hear Carlo's name called from the podium, however he could work his way onto a team's roster.

Dan Fox and Calabrese's careers were intertwined for five years and I think Fox developed a wider skill set over that time making him a more well rounded inside linebacker.  I think Fox has a chance to be drafted and if not I would expect him to be signed as a free agent very quickly.

Bennett Jackson comes into the draft with potential and tools.  I think he took a step back his senior season getting beat on big plays.  His body of work at Notre Dame may however may result in him being drafted in a later round.  If not he will not only be signed as a free agent he will make a team for the fall.

TJ Jones has a very good career in South Bend and did develop into an upper level college receiver.  Jones very well could be drafted in the mid to late rounds to a team looking for a solid receiver who has good hands, is a solid route runner yet a bit undersized.  Not only will he be on and NFL roster next season he should have a nice little career.

Zack Martin should not only go in the first round but he may also be the first Notre Dame player taken in this year's draft.  Martin has more starts than anyone in Irish football history and has consistently performed well.  Offensive lineman are not flashy and can play in the NFL for 15 years, make 8 Pro Bowls and be barley seen.  Look for Marin to bring his lunch box in everyday and make a solid impact during his NFL career.

Troy Niklas came to South Bend, played a year on defense, moved to offense for his sophomore season, used his junior year to develop into a solid tight end, then left.  With a nickname like Hercules his physical abilities can carry him a long ways.  Niklas could have used another season to develop his skills at the tight end position but because of his potential expect an NFL team to take him late in the draft.  It will take Troy some time to develop but if he can work it out he could be special.

Louis Nix III had work to do to make the transition from high school to college football and made the most of his time in South Bend (had a year of eligibility left).  If Nix can impact an NFL team on the defensive line like he did at Notre Dame he could be a very dangerous player.  Although most pick Nix to go in the first round and he should, depending on what teams need he might end up going early in the second round.  As an extra note his personality could make him a loveable fan favorite in the city he plays.

Tommy Rees probably surprises a lot of people by being listed as a prospect, however if you look at Rees's stats he looks impressive.  Even if you look at his body of work coming off the bench he has shown poise and leadership.  No way, no how is he drafted but I would bet he makes a practice squad somewhere.

Prince Shembo could be a great steel for some team in this draft. I have always been a fan of Shembo and think in the right system he could be a good NFL player.  He most likely will not be drafted but he should defiantly be signed as a free agent and will work his way onto a team.  His motor alone could get him a solid career.

Danny Spond is listed why?  He could have been a prospect but medical issues ended his career.  However the NFL could someday be in his future as coaching fits right into his wheel house.

Stephon Tuitt has too much of an upside not to be taken early.  Injury hampered Tuitt during his play during his career but his combination of speed and size along with what he has shown is well worth the first round selection.  Even though he has first round potential depending on team needs he might slide to the second round but I doubt it.  If he can stay healthy and live up to his potential look for a very good NFL career from Tuitt.

Chris Watt is the best Notre Dame offensive lineman not named Martin in the draft.  Watt has NFL potential and most likely have to take the free agent Watt however I would not be overly surprised if he was taken late in the draft by a team looking for a solid lineman.

Spring to Fall: Running Back

Everyone loves a good quarterback competition and I am sure that the Irish Fans will have one that they can banter about all fall.  However there is going to be some solid competition for touches at the running back position again this fall.  Rotating players at any position can be a blessing or a curse.  The ability to rest between plays and put in personal that may be better suited depending on the play call.  Brian Kelly and Mike Denbrock have a potential three headed monster in their backfield that if played right could make the Irish faithful very happy.

Most consider Tarean Folston to be the number one back heading into the fall and with good reason.  As a freshman Folston showed that he has the potential to be a number one back at the college level rushing for 5.3 yards per carry highlighted by a 140 yard performance against Navy.  Folston is an all around talent with speed, power and pass catching ability (5 receptions for 35 yards).  I would not say he is overly great at one specific are but very good at all of them.   Folston would be the logical choice to be the starting running back on August 31 but he won't be the only one getting meaningful carries.

Cam McDaniel is the elder statesman of the group entering his senior season.  Next to Cam's name for position he should be listed as football player.  During his three seasons in South Bend McDaniel has played both running back and cornerback.  Brian Kelly should have red-shirted him to start his career especially with the stable of talent Kelly had in 2011.  Cam burned a year of eligibility playing on special teams and rushing three times for a total of nine yards.  With McDaniel running backs coach Tony Alford knows what he is getting; a tough running back who has deceptive speed.  He is no burner but he moves fast enough when he needs to.  Cam is also counted on when short yards are needed.

Finally as much as we know what we are getting with Camp McDaniel the same can be true about what the potential is with Greg Bryant.  He is the wild card of the group.  It terms of athleticism, his high school resume, potential and being as cut as anyone one the team Greg could be good, real good.  We have seen glimpses of greatness last season in very limited exposure and some solid runs this spring.  We have also seen signs he could be good at best.

Overall Irish fans should be excited about the running game this season.  The potential is there for something special.  Even though Kelly had more options for talent in his stable of running backs (George Atkinson has moved on to try his hand at the NFL and Amir Carlisle has moved out to the Slot) I think the Notre Dame Offense has moved up at the position.  I think Kelly had too many options and none of them were able to get traction (no pun intended) until later in the season.

Expect Folston and McDaniel to start the season with the majority of the carries and Bryant worked in.  Bryant's season will depend on how well Folston and McDaniel do as well has how great he is when he gets his touches.  I expect both Folston and McDaniel to perform well meaning Bryant will really have to impress when he gets his opportunities.  If Bryant does not excel at a very high level his time will be limited.  Greg needs to take carries away from the incumbents, he cannot sit around and wait for them to give him a chance or he will be waiting until 2015 to show us what he can do.
